If you cannot find your answer below, feel free to contact us for additional information.
Measuring Your Window
A The width of your window from outside molding to outside molding.
B The length of your window from the top of molding to the window sill.
C The length of your window from the point where you would like to place hardware to the window sill.
How wide should a valance be in order to fit my window?
To determine whether a valance will fit your window, first take a look at the style of the valance.
For tailored valances, use the following calculation:
Total Width = The width of your window from outside of molding to outside of molding (Letter A from above illustration) + Returns* on curtain rod (Example: A 2.5" curtain rod has a normal return of 3.5 to 5 inches on each side) + 2 inches of play room
Example:
Window Width = 35 inches (Letter A) +
7 inches of curtain rod returns (3.5 inches from each side) +
2 inches of play room
Total Width = 44 inches
For gathered valances, use the following calculation:
Total Width = 1.5 or 2** times the width of your window from outside of molding to outside of molding (Letter A from above illustration)
Example:
Window Width = 35 inches (Letter A) x 1.5
Total Valance Width = 52.5 inches
or
Window Width = 35 inches (Letter A) x 2
Total Valance Width = 70 inches
Notes
*"Returns" define the number of inches the curtain rod projects from the wall.
**Choosing 1.5 or 2 for gathered valances is a matter of personal preference. Choose 1.5 for a less gathered look, and 2 for a more gathered look.
Where should I place the curtain hardware?
Whenever possible, curtain hardware should be installed on the wall rather than the window molding. We recommend this for a couple of reasons. First, it is more difficult to repair window molding than a wall if you should happen to change the hardware. Second, you can make the window appear larger by installing hardware above the window molding.
