FAQs

We know it can sometimes be confusing determining if a window treatment will fit and look good in your home.  Below you will find instructions on how to measure your window and additional helpful hints on installing window treatments. If you cannot find your answer below feel free to contact us for additional information.

Measuring Your Window

  The width of your window from outside molding to outside molding.

   The length of your window from the top of molding to the window sill.

   The length of your window from the point where you would like to place hardware to the window sill.

How wide should a valance be in order to fit my window?

To determine whether a valance will fit your window first take a look at the style of the valance.

Tailored valances would use the following calculation:

width=The width of your window from outside molding to outside molding (Letter A from

           above illustration) +

           Amount of returns on curtain rod (Example: A 2 1/2 inch curtain rod has a normal

           return of 3 1/2 to 5 inches on each side) +

           2 inches of play room

Example

width= 35 inches (Letter A) +

            7 inches of curtain rod returns (3 1/2 inches from each side) +

            2 inches of play room

width = 44 inches

Gathered valances would use the following calculation:

width = 1.5 or 2 times the width of your window from outside molding to outside molding

             (Letter A from above illustration)

Example

width = 35 inches (Letter A) * 1.5

width = 52.5 inches

or

width = 35 inches (Letter A) * 2

width = 70 inches

Notes

1. Returns - defines the number of inches the curtain rod projects from the wall.

2. Choosing 1.5 or 2.0 for gathered valances is a matter of personal preference.  Choose 1.5 for a less gathered look, and 2.0 for a more gathered look.

Where should I place the curtain hardware?

Whenever possible curtain hardware should be installed on the wall rather than the window molding.  We recommend this for a couple of reasons.  The first is it is more difficult to repair window molding than a wall if you should happen to change the hardware and the second is you can make the window appear larger by installing hardware above the window molding.
